It has about 1,120 inhabitants and is about 80 kilometres from Siena, on the border with the Val d’Orcia.
While tourists travel ecstatic through the hills of the Val d’Orcia, a UNESCO heritage site, they cannot help but come across the famous Radicofani tower that stands out in the background.
This is the fortress conquered by the brigand Ghino di Tacco, who later became the lord of the “town”. However, Radicofani is not only the fortress, is remembered as a flourishing medieval village especially for the famous Via Francigena.
The ancient post station was, and is located, right here and represented a refuge and a focal place for travellers who went to Rome, following the Via Francigena. The Medici style of the structure still strikes the eye, you can easily see the area used for stables and the particular source built on the opposite side of the station. Many famous people have passed through these lands including: Stendhal, Charles Dickens and Goethe.
In addition to the historical centre, purely medieval, and the naturalistic views that can be photographed from the top of the hill, there are also two churches enclosed in this small centre. The church of Sant’Agata is a medieval building that contains ceramics attributed to Andrea Della Robbia and other works of art. The Pieve di San Pietro is the oldest of the two and is built in Romanesque-Greek style. It also contains ceramics attributed to the Della Robbia school.[/vc_column_text]

[vc_single_image image=”4982″ img_size=”300×300″ onclick=”link_image” lazy_loading=”true”][vc_single_image image=”4984″ img_size=”300×300″ onclick=”link_image” lazy_loading=”true”][vc_single_image image=”4986″ img_size=”300×300″ onclick=”link_image” lazy_loading=”true”][vc_single_image image=”4988″ img_size=”300×300″ onclick=”link_image” lazy_loading=”true”][vc_single_image image=”4990″ img_size=”300×300″ onclick=”link_image” lazy_loading=”true”][vc_single_image image=”4992″ img_size=”300×300″ onclick=”link_image” lazy_loading=”true”][vc_single_image image=”4994″ img_size=”300×300″ onclick=”link_image” lazy_loading=”true”][vc_single_image image=”4996″ img_size=”300×300″ onclick=”link_image” lazy_loading=”true”][vc_single_image image=”4998″ img_size=”300×300″ onclick=”link_image” lazy_loading=”true”][vc_single_image image=”5000″ img_size=”300×300″ onclick=”link_image” lazy_loading=”true”]

 [/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]

Festival of ancient crafts

Radicofani is not only history and art, is also life. In fact, various events take place during the year; here are the most particular ones. The first we should mention is certainly the Festival of Ancient Crafts. As you can well understand from the name, the ancient traditions are rediscovered here.
This event takes place in the summer and precisely on June 1st and 2nd.
The roots of the city and the ancient crafts that were carried out in the Middle Ages are highlighted: the shoemaker, the carpenter, the knife grinder, the manufacture of wicker baskets, the processing of cheese, making laundry with ash, in short, a real immersion in the year 1000 AD. The strong point of this traditional festival regards the wheat harvest, the threshing with ancient machinery and the “accimatura” of the haystack. All this is obviously coloured with itinerant bands, theatrical performances and food stands that cannot miss the much loved refreshment..

“Palio del Bigonzo”

The other folkloristic event that takes place in the town is the so-called Palio del Bigonzo.
In addition to being an important point for the Via Francigena, the medieval village also had a very flourishing wine culture. On the 8th of September the Madonna delle vigne is celebrated and it is in fact on that day that the Palio takes place. The city quarters that compete for the coveted prize are 5:
Castello, Castelmorro, Bonmigliaccio, Borgo Maggiore and Contignano.
The event consists of two parts: the competition between archers and the race with the bigonzo. It was a large container where the farmers used to put the grapes after having harvested them.
Archers compete to establish the starting grid of the race; it is a real qualification. Subsequently, pairs of challengers from each district will have to run through the streets of the town carrying a bigonzo each. In this context, the bigonzo is ballasted with 20 kg, so as to be fair for all the city quarters.
Who is the winner? Obviously, the city quarter that is faster at the finish in Piazza San Pietro.
Even during this folkloric event there are historical re-enactments, processions, flag-wavers, musicians, and all this makes us seem to live in another era. The city quarters are very fierce, the Palio is a very coveted prize in the life of the country, there are ridicule, jokes, joys and disappointments. At the end of the day, alchemy is found in the taverns of the city quarters.

Piaceri d’estate (summer pleasures)

Piaceri d’estate is an event that takes place on the first weekend of July and develops through a series of events: food markets, conferences on agricultural and environmental issues, animation in the Rocca area, astronomical observation of the sky.
Radicofani is a historical pearl that lives on image and tradition, after all, how can you not notice that imposing tower from the Val d’Orcia?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

Attractions in Radicofani

Fortress

Church of San Pietro.

Church of Sant’Agata.

Church of the Madonna delle Vigne.

the historic centre in general and the Maccione garden.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

Institutional and recommended sites

Municipality website

Proloco Facebook page

Find out more on wikipedia[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Find out where to stay and where to taste the typical dishes of the country in the best restaurants.
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_hoverbox image=”5507″ primary_title=”Discover !” primary_title_font_container=”font_size:35px|color:%23ffffff” primary_title_use_theme_fonts=”yes” hover_title=”Contignano” hover_btn_title=”Find out!” hover_btn_color=”success” use_custom_fonts_primary_title=”true” hover_add_button=”true” hover_btn_link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.valdorciamiata.it%2Fen%2Fcontignano%2F|||”]Discover the ancient village.[/vc_hoverbox][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_hoverbox image=”3445″ primary_title=”Discover !” primary_title_font_container=”font_size:35px|color:%23ffffff” primary_title_use_theme_fonts=”yes” hover_title=”Fortress of Radicofani” hover_btn_title=”Find out!” hover_btn_color=”success” use_custom_fonts_primary_title=”true” hover_add_button=”true” hover_btn_link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.valdorciamiata.it%2Fen%2Fthe-fortress-of-radicofani%2F|||”]Find out more about the castle[/vc_hoverbox][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/4″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_btn title=”Where to stay” color=”success” size=”lg” align=”center” i_type=”the7″ i_icon_the7=”fas fa-bed” button_block=”true” add_icon=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.valdorciamiata.it%2Fen%2Fwhere-to-stay-radicofani%2F|||”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_btn title=”Where to eat” color=”success” size=”lg” align=”center” i_icon_fontawesome=”fas fa-utensils” button_block=”true” add_icon=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.valdorciamiata.it%2Fen%2Fwhere-to-eat-radicofani%2F|||”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]Radicofani is a characteristic medieval village located in front of Mount Amiata.
