The Abbey of Sant’Antimo is a monastic complex located in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, part of the municipality of Montalcino. Inhabited for centuries by Benedictine monks who following the monastic rule “ ora et labora ” mark the times inside the Abbey.
The origins are very ancient, the legend tells that at the time of the holy Roman empire the emperor Charlemagne built a small chapel in this place. Currently that chapel is the abbey sacristy. In the twelfth century work began on the expansion thanks to the huge donations in 1118 the Abbey became one of the most important in the whole region.
Subsequently, in the XIII century it experienced a long period of decay and despite the church’s interventions this period continued until 1870 when the architect Giuseppe Partini will bring the church back to its present appearance.
Curiosities: concerts, workshops and seminars are organized at the Abbey. Inside the complex there is the monastic pharmacy where you can buy natural products made with medicinal herbs, olive oil, red grapes, lavender.
