A perfect itinerary for travelers who love to stroll, explore, and immerse themselves in the rich history and stunning landscapes of Tuscany
A morning in Santa Fiora: where water, stone, and secrets await
Park just outside the town center and begin your walk through the streets of Santa Fiora, a compact and intimate village filled with stone alleyways, covered passages, and flower-adorned balconies.
One of the first recommended stops is the Pieve delle Sante Flora e Lucilla, home to a precious collection of Della Robbia ceramic a burst of color in an otherwise austere setting, a truly valuable artistic touch.
From here, head down to the green heart of the village: the Parco della Peschiera, fed by the Fiora spring. The little lake, charming bridges, and the soothing sound of flowing water all combine to create a fresh and relaxing atmosphere. You can pause here, take a leisurely stroll, or simply sit and observe—no wonder it’s one of the most photographed spots in the village.
Set into the walls of the Peschiera, you’ll find one of Santa Fiora’s most unique surprises: the Church of the Madonna della Neve, built directly above the waters of the Fiora spring. Through the glass floor, you can watch the water flowing beneath your feet, creating a rare and evocative experience.
If you’re interested in the local history, you can also visit the nearby Mining Museum, which tells the story of the area’s mining tradition through documents, photographs, and artifacts linked to the underground work that shaped life on Mount Amiata for centuries.
Afternoon in Arcidosso: history, fortress, and panoramic views
In the afternoon, take the car and drive just a few kilometers to Arcidosso, whose stone-built historic center climbs uphill toward the Aldobrandesca Fortress, a landmark visible from across the valley.
Park along the main road and walk up to explore the cobbled streets, framed by stone arches and charming corners. From the top of the village, you can enjoy sweeping views that stretch from the cone-shaped Mount Amiata to the distant Maremma.
Don’t miss a visit to the Aldobrandesca Fortress. Inside, you’ll also find the MACO – Museum of Oriental Art and Culture, an unexpected collection dedicated to the Tibetan and Himalayan world. Statues, ritual objects, thangka paintings, and installations guide you through a truly unique experience.
A short distance away, there’s also a small exhibition dedicated to David Lazzaretti, a historic figure from Mount Amiata, tied to popular spirituality and social justice.
Arcidosso is also an excellent starting point for those who love walking: nearby trails are perfect for short hikes and scenic walks, weaving through woods, chestnut groves, and breathtaking viewpoints over Mount Amiata and the Grosseto valley.
