The Fiaccole of Abbadia San Salvatore are one of the most fascinating and evocative Christmas traditions in Tuscany. Every year, on the evening of Christmas Eve (December 24), the medieval village at the foot of Mount Amiata lights up with dozens of large bonfires that transform the town into a spectacular scene of fire, light and tradition.
The fiaccole are huge piles of wood, several meters high, built in the days before the event by groups of local residents. In the late afternoon of Christmas Eve, after a ceremony held in front of the Town Hall, the bonfires are lit one after another in the squares and along the streets of the historic center, creating a unique atmosphere that attracts visitors from all over Tuscany and beyond.
Walking through the streets of Abbadia San Salvatore, illuminated by the flames of the fiaccole, you can experience a truly authentic and timeless atmosphere. Around the large bonfires, locals and visitors gather to warm themselves, exchange Christmas wishes and share mulled wine (vin brulé), sweets and local specialties.
The fiaccole are not only a spectacular sight, but also a powerful symbol of community and identity for the town. This centuries-old tradition represents one of the most important moments of the year for the people of Abbadia and is one of the most distinctive Christmas events in Tuscany.
Every year thousands of people come to Mount Amiata to experience this unique celebration: a different kind of Christmas Eve, surrounded by the warmth of the fire and the magic of mountain traditions.
