The Fattoria dei Barbi is located in Montalcino, a few kilometers from the famous abbey of Sant’Antimo, in the heart of the Val d’Orcia, and since the late 1700s it has been owned by the Colombini family. With an extension of over 300 hectares in the lands of southern Tuscany, the Fattoria dei Barbi is one of the major producers of Brunello, the well-known wine of Montalcino. That of the Barbi is certainly one of the best known Brunello and has received more awards in the world, since the end of the 1800s, for its high level of quality.
It was Giovanni Colombini who realized, many years ago, that the farm had to become a small village open to the public, where you can discover, taste and buy the products: wine tourism was born here in 1949, which today represents a great value for our land. So the Fattoria dei Barbi was transformed from a cellar with a vineyard into a world where viticulture was harmoniously integrated with the production of olives and cereals and with the breeding of pigs and sheep. The cereals fed the animals that produced natural fertilizer for the vineyards.
Even today Stefano Cinelli Colombini directs the Fattoria dei Barbi scrupulously following the indications of his grandfather Giovanni, with attention to innovation and with the same love for the territory and hospitality: every day of the year at the Farm it is in fact possible to make a tour of the historic cellars, book guided tastings, appreciate wine pairings with company and typical products of the area, visit the Brunello Museum.
Last but not least, the opportunity to savor the cuisine of the Taverna and participate in cooking lessons or events that are organized every year with a program available on the Farm’s website.
Visit to the historic cellars
The visit to the historic cellars where the wine is aged, among over 300 wooden barrels and a few thousand bottles of Brunello, is certainly one of the attractions not to be missed at the Fattoria dei Barbi. There you will be able to discover the wine production techniques, learn about some secrets of the wine aging process and learn more about the history of the Farm and its Brunello. In over 70 years of opening, over 1.5 million wine lovers and tourists have been lucky enough to visit the cellars.
Dishes and tradition at the Taverna dei Barbi
For over half a century, inside the Fattoria dei Barbi there has been a tavern created to taste the typical Montalcino and family dishes in combination with the excellent wines produced. Thus, after a visit to the historic cellars, you can rest outdoors in summer, in front of a large fireplace in winter and taste the wines of the farm and excellent local dishes, prepared by qualified chefs, according to the best tradition of the area.
