The Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Pietro is located in the town of Piancastagnaio and stands in place of a previous church built in Romanesque style. A great peace envelops the Sanctuary, reminding the traveler that only in God can he find true rest and serenity.
According to the legend, around 1500, a young boy who was in the area, entered the church and knelt in front of the painting of the Madonna with Child, painted by the painter Martino di Urbano, he felt that the Virgin Mary asked him to pray for the sins of all Christians. This news spread quickly among the inhabitants of the country.
Around the 1600s the church was completely restored and the painting of the Madonna was moved to the main altar where the façade used to stand. In 1979 the facade was plastered so as to highlight the portal and the rose window of the church.
In the side walls there are some very particular frescos that represent the Novissimi: Death, Judgment, Hell, and Paradise, a work by Francesco Nasini.
Where: Provincial Road of Mount Amiata, 53025 Piancastagnaio.
