The chestnut festival in an Amiata hill town
From Friday 30 October to Sunday 1 November 2026, Piancastagnaio once again celebrates Il Crastatone, one of Mount Amiata’s most distinctive autumn festivals. The event revolves around chestnuts, traditional roasted “crastate” and the town’s historic centre, with the contrade playing a central role in welcoming visitors.
For anyone visiting Amiata in autumn, it is a chance to experience the town around All Saints’ Day, when cellars, food stands and the streets of the centre tell the story of the bond between Piancastagnaio, its chestnut woods and mountain cooking.
What to expect during Il Crastatone
The tourism sources consulted list Il Crastatone 2026 from 30 October to 1 November. The detailed programme is usually updated by the Pro Loco and the organisers in the weeks before the event, but the traditional format includes roasted chestnuts, chestnut-based dishes, new wine, local products, markets, music and activities throughout the historic centre.

An idea for a Mount Amiata visit
Il Crastatone can be a good starting point for a weekend between Piancastagnaio, Abbadia San Salvatore and the woods of Mount Amiata. Visitors coming for the festival can combine it with a walk through the town, the Aldobrandesca Fortress and autumn itineraries dedicated to chestnuts, mushrooms and mountain landscapes.
