On Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September 2026, Radicofani hosts the Palio del Bigonzo, one of the most recognisable traditions of the village and the Val d’Orcia. The symbolic protagonist is the bigonzo, an old grape-harvesting container, carried in the race by the contrade through the streets of the town.
The event opens on Saturday evening in Piazza San Pietro with the flag ceremony and the presentation of the archers and runners. The archery competition determines the starting positions for the Palio race.
On Sunday, the programme continues with the historical parade from Porta da Piedi, Mass in the Church of San Pietro, the presentation of the Palio and the blessing of the contrade. In the afternoon, the parade and the most eagerly awaited moments of the re-enactment return, leading up to the race with the bigonzi and the celebration in the historic centre.
For visitors, it is an opportunity to see Radicofani in a lively and participatory setting, with costumes, musicians, flag-wavers and a popular tradition that tells the story of the village’s relationship with the grape harvest and its contrade.
