The festival brings the traditions of the past back to life, offering visitors historical reenactments of ancient crafts and rural activities on Sunday May 31 and Tuesday June 2. Throughout the streets of the historic center, guests will discover artisans at work, antique farming machinery, traditional threshing demonstrations, parades of vintage tractors and vehicles, antique markets, old-fashioned games, photography exhibitions, folk songs, live music and traditional ballroom dancing.

New for this year, the event will also feature historical reenactments dedicated to vintage tractors and traditional agricultural work, allowing visitors to experience even more closely the farming heritage and rural traditions of the area.

Monday June 1 will instead focus on vintage tractor reenactments, evening food stands and live music performances.

The festival programme also includes traditional food stands:

The name “Cazzagnoli” comes from the traditional preparation method: the pasta, made only with water and flour, was “cazzata”, meaning rolled out with an ansagnolo (rolling pin) and then cut by hand with a knife. The verb cazzare is still used in nautical terminology, where it means “to stretch or tighten”.

Monte Amiata is getting ready to welcome a new season dedicated to adrenaline and outdoor adventure with the reopening of the Amiata Freeride Bike Resort.

Starting from May 16, riders and mountain bike enthusiasts will once again be able to enjoy the trails and downhill tracks of the famous bike park, located within the largest beech forest in Europe.

Over the past few years, Monte Amiata has become one of Tuscany’s main destinations for freeride and enduro biking, thanks to routes designed both for experienced bikers and for those approaching the sport for the first time. Technical trails, flow trails, forest single tracks and dedicated services make the area increasingly popular among two-wheel enthusiasts.

The new season will also bring several new features, including investments in infrastructure, lift services and training areas designed for beginners, families and children. Special attention has also been given to the organization of events and activities that will enliven the summer on Monte Amiata, strengthening the connection between sport, tourism and local area promotion.

Surrounded by forests, breathtaking views and nature trails, Amiata continues to establish itself as an ideal destination for those seeking an authentic outdoor experience in the heart of Tuscany. The 2026 season is ready to begin, bringing back to the mountain the energy and passion of the biking community.

The Mount Amiata Volcano Trail (cammino del Vulcano Amiata) is a scenic circular route of about 120 kilometers located in the heart of southern Tuscany, around Mount Amiata. This hiking itinerary, considered challenging, winds around an ancient volcano, crossing medieval villages, dense forests and breathtaking landscapes between the Val d’Orcia and the Maremma.

Each village along the trail can serve as a starting point: Abbadia San Salvatore, Santa Fiora, Arcidosso, Castel del Piano and Seggiano.

The route divides the journey into five main stages, each with detailed technical information including distances, walking times and elevation changes.

In addition to technical information, the trail’s website also offers practical advice on accommodation and equipment, allowing hikers to customize their starting point and plan their journey.

The initiative aims to enhance the identity of the territory, promoting a form of slow tourism that combines nature, history and spirituality.

Important:
Trail signage is currently being completed and the route will be ready by early summer 2026. Stay tuned to this page for updated information.

The Fiaccole of Abbadia San Salvatore are one of the most fascinating and evocative Christmas traditions in Tuscany. Every year, on the evening of Christmas Eve (December 24), the medieval village at the foot of Mount Amiata lights up with dozens of large bonfires that transform the town into a spectacular scene of fire, light and tradition.

The fiaccole are huge piles of wood, several meters high, built in the days before the event by groups of local residents. In the late afternoon of Christmas Eve, after a ceremony held in front of the Town Hall, the bonfires are lit one after another in the squares and along the streets of the historic center, creating a unique atmosphere that attracts visitors from all over Tuscany and beyond.

Walking through the streets of Abbadia San Salvatore, illuminated by the flames of the fiaccole, you can experience a truly authentic and timeless atmosphere. Around the large bonfires, locals and visitors gather to warm themselves, exchange Christmas wishes and share mulled wine (vin brulé), sweets and local specialties.

The fiaccole are not only a spectacular sight, but also a powerful symbol of community and identity for the town. This centuries-old tradition represents one of the most important moments of the year for the people of Abbadia and is one of the most distinctive Christmas events in Tuscany.

Every year thousands of people come to Mount Amiata to experience this unique celebration: a different kind of Christmas Eve, surrounded by the warmth of the fire and the magic of mountain traditions.

Santa Fiora and Robbiane: two historic and artistic treasures.

We can admire these true pearls of the past when we decide to visit the beautiful Tuscany. We begin with the manner determined by the square of Santa Fiora where there is the oldest part of the town located in the Monte Amiata, near Grosseto.

The story is able to increase the culture when we admire the beauty of the time. The town is dominated by the medieval defensive structures Aldobrandeschi: remain the square tower, stands in the shoe and the clip of the clock tower; the center we find a glazed pottery of the Della Robbia (original element surviving clock).

In the final portion of the square stands the Palazzo Sforza (XVI century) in Renaissance style. The front door was one of the gateways to the country. Inside the palace, the restoration work has brought to light a great cycle of frescoes of the sixteenth century Roman School, original example of secular art throughout Italy in the Amiata area.

The story always leaves fascinated and when we see these testimonies is really easy to imagine that time; We understand the different social habits and peculiarities that distinguish so far only several Italian towns.

The role of history

There is no doubt about the historical value. We can state with certainty that one of Santa Fiora is one of the largest collections of works by Della Robbia and, with those of Radicofani, represent the only example of Florentine art in the territory subject to Sienese art domain.

The robbiane santafioresi are of monumental altarpieces in glazed earthenware, of rare beauty for the sobriety of images, colors and harmony of shapes. The works that we can admire in Pieve are the Baptism of Jesus, the Madonna of the Girdle, the Last Supper and the Resurrection (the pulpit), a triptych depicting the coronation of the Virgin and Saints Francis and Jerome.

A complete rundown of the artistic works of the cycle are two precious historical treasures: a crucifix and a tabernacle of holy oils. When we admire these historical artifacts that make up the great Italian cultural heritage scattered in Pensiola, we can understand with greater knowledge of the importance of history and of wealth owned by Italy.

It is a reflection to understand the strategic role of culture that should be good for tourism to manage its particular facets: from openness to usability.

Immediately after passing Port of ladders leads to Terziere Borgo: there is a beautiful view of the Parco della Peschiera.

When we climb over the railing on the left, we can admire the roofs full of moss that slope towards the valley of the Sasso Petersola, the river Fiora and, on the left, at the foot of Bald River where white firs infoltiscono and obscure vegetation , the Convent of SS. Trinity.

We continue for Via of the nuns and we reach the Convent of the Poor Clares, founded in the early seventeenth century by the Sienese mystic Passitea Croci, where he guards a Wooden Crucifix thought to be miraculous and highly revered by local people.

Backtracking we find on the left Via S. Antonio, which flows in the square, where they remain the ruins of the church dedicated to the saint and destroyed in the Napoleonic period. From the square starts the picturesque Via Lunga where between ‘500 and’ 700 resided the Jewish community.

We continue the visit to Piazza S. Agostino, where, in the early fourteenth century, was built the Convent of the Augustinians. The monastic complex was completed by a hospital, the school and the church of San Michele Arcangelo. Considerable the lintel and the plaque with the symbol Augustinian placed on the external side wall.

The church was originally chosen for the tombs of the counts Aldobrandeschi. The convent was suppressed following the Leopoldina reforms (eighteenth century). The church was located the polychrome wooden statue by Jacopo della Quercia, currently on display, with other material from the convent, the Museum of Pitigliano.

Two charming villages, close to each other and perfect for those who wish to experience the magic of Mount Amiata. Between breathtaking landscapes, timeless traditions, and peaceful corners, Castel del Piano and Seggiano are the perfect destinations for a day filled with art, culture, nature, and authentic Tuscan charm.

Morning in Castel del Piano: ancient lanes, frescoes, and stories to uncover

Start your day in Castel del Piano, a village nestled on the western slopes of the Amiata.
Leave your car near Piazza Garibaldi, at the entrance to the historic center, and continue on foot: it’s the best way to appreciate the intimate atmosphere of this mountain town, with its narrow alleys, hidden courtyards, and views steeped in history.

The cobbled streets wind around Piazza Madonna, the vibrant heart of the village, where the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie stands out with its simple stone façade and elegant Baroque wooden altar. Just a short distance away, a panoramic viewpoint offers a unique glimpse of the village and the surrounding hills.

Tradition lives here in color too: the four districts of the Palio, run every year on 8 September, fly their flags from balconies and doorways. It’s not just a folkloric event, but a moment that unites generations in a celebration of shared identity.

Afternoon in Seggiano: contemporary art and centuries-old olive trees

After lunch, drive to Seggiano, about 10 minutes from Castel del Piano.
Park just outside the center and stroll through the quiet, orderly lanes of one of the most compact villages in the area.
The historic center is peaceful, yet a glance upward shows that Seggiano is anything but frozen in time: this is where you’ll find the Daniel Spoerri Garden, an open-air art park immersed in nature, with dozens of installations perfectly integrated into the landscape. It’s a surreal and stimulating place that changes with every season.

The village is renowned for cultivating the Seggianese olive, which thrives thanks to a unique microclimate and yields an oil with an unmistakable flavor—absolutely worth tasting.

Also worth seeing is the Diffused Oil Museum, housed inside the restored ancient mill, where the history and unique quality of the Olivastra Seggianese—a symbol of these hills—are showcased.

If you happen to be there at sunset, climb up to the fortress or to the viewpoints along the walls to admire the vista over the Val d’Orcia.
From here, short routes lead to hermitages and old mills—ideal for walks or e-bike excursions.

Useful tips

The Daniel Spoerri Garden is extensive: to see it all, allow at least 2 hours.

Bring water and comfortable shoes, especially if you plan to walk in the hilly areas around the village.

In summer, check the days and opening times of museums and art gardens, as they may vary.

Castel del Piano and Seggiano are two different faces of the same land: one livelier and steeped in history, the other quiet and contemplative. Visiting both in a single day is possible, but you may find yourself wanting to return—more slowly—to rediscover them again.

Discover the timeless charm of Mount Amiata with a journey through two enchanting villages. In Santa Fiora, crystal-clear waters weave between stone streets and lush nature, while Arcidosso captivates with its ancient fortress and breathtaking views that stretch all the way to the Maremma.
A perfect itinerary for travelers who love to stroll, explore, and immerse themselves in the rich history and stunning landscapes of Tuscany

A morning in Santa Fiora: where water, stone, and secrets await

Park just outside the town center and begin your walk through the streets of Santa Fiora, a compact and intimate village filled with stone alleyways, covered passages, and flower-adorned balconies.
One of the first recommended stops is the Pieve delle Sante Flora e Lucilla, home to a precious collection of Della Robbia ceramic a burst of color in an otherwise austere setting, a truly valuable artistic touch.

From here, head down to the green heart of the village: the Parco della Peschiera, fed by the Fiora spring. The little lake, charming bridges, and the soothing sound of flowing water all combine to create a fresh and relaxing atmosphere. You can pause here, take a leisurely stroll, or simply sit and observe—no wonder it’s one of the most photographed spots in the village.

Set into the walls of the Peschiera, you’ll find one of Santa Fiora’s most unique surprises: the Church of the Madonna della Neve, built directly above the waters of the Fiora spring. Through the glass floor, you can watch the water flowing beneath your feet, creating a rare and evocative experience.
If you’re interested in the local history, you can also visit the nearby Mining Museum, which tells the story of the area’s mining tradition through documents, photographs, and artifacts linked to the underground work that shaped life on Mount Amiata for centuries.

Afternoon in Arcidosso: history, fortress, and panoramic views

In the afternoon, take the car and drive just a few kilometers to Arcidosso, whose stone-built historic center climbs uphill toward the Aldobrandesca Fortress, a landmark visible from across the valley.
Park along the main road and walk up to explore the cobbled streets, framed by stone arches and charming corners. From the top of the village, you can enjoy sweeping views that stretch from the cone-shaped Mount Amiata to the distant Maremma.

Don’t miss a visit to the Aldobrandesca Fortress. Inside, you’ll also find the MACO – Museum of Oriental Art and Culture, an unexpected collection dedicated to the Tibetan and Himalayan world. Statues, ritual objects, thangka paintings, and installations guide you through a truly unique experience.

A short distance away, there’s also a small exhibition dedicated to David Lazzaretti, a historic figure from Mount Amiata, tied to popular spirituality and social justice.

Arcidosso is also an excellent starting point for those who love walking: nearby trails are perfect for short hikes and scenic walks, weaving through woods, chestnut groves, and breathtaking viewpoints over Mount Amiata and the Grosseto valley.

Useful tips for your visit

You can easily visit both villages in a single day, traveling by car or motorcycle.

Bring comfortable shoes: the village centers are uphill with cobblestone streets.

The museums in Arcidosso are small but well maintained; however, check the opening hours in advance, as they may vary on weekdays

Two nearby yet distinct villages, perfect for a day of discoveries amidst nature, history, and tranquility. Santa Fiora and Arcidosso offer a delightful mix of beauty, culture, and landscapes—an ideal escape to recharge among the trails and rolling hills of Mount Amiata.

Are you wondering what to see in San Quirico d’Orcia in just one day?
This small Tuscan village, often less known than its neighbors Pienza or Montalcino, is a true surprise: elegant, peaceful, full of history, and with corners that seem painted on canvas.

An ideal destination for those who love to stroll unhurriedly, savor beauty, and discover the authentic soul of Val d’Orcia.

Between ancient walls and secret gardens

Upon arriving in San Quirico, park your car outside the historic center and begin your visit on foot. Entering through the medieval walls is already a journey back in time: tidy alleys, light-colored stone, peaceful shops.
Your first must-see stop is the Collegiata of Saints Quirico and Giulitta, a Romanesque church with carved portals and a façade that tells centuries of history. Just ahead lies a hidden gem: the gardens of Palazzo Chigi, known as the Horti Leonini.
This 16th-century Italian-style garden is a surprising place, geometric yet relaxing — perfect for reading a plaque, taking a photo, or simply breathing in the atmosphere.

The heart of the village and the Via Francigena

Continuing along the main street, you’ll notice that San Quirico is small but vibrant — every stone tells a story. The streets are lined with artisan workshops, bakeries, wine shops, and a few welcoming cafés and restaurants for a snack or a coffee break.
The village is crossed by the Via Francigena, the ancient pilgrimage route, and you can still feel that atmosphere of passage and encounter, between tourists, walkers, and people who stop by even just for a few hours.

Postcard landscapes and must-see spots

In the afternoon, head just outside the village to explore some of the most iconic landscapes of Val d’Orcia.
A few minutes by car along the road to Torrenieri, you’ll find the famous Cypress Circle of San Quirico, a perfectly round group of trees that has become a symbol of the Tuscan landscape.
From here, the view opens up to rolling hills, plays of light, and colors that change with the seasons.
A little further on, in the opposite direction toward Pienza, you’ll reach the Chapel of the Madonna di Vitaleta: a small, solitary church framed by cypresses, photographed every year by thousands of visitors.

It’s one of those places that seem frozen in time: essential, silent, perfect to admire for even just a few moments before heading back.

Before you leave

Back in the village, treat yourself to a moment of relaxation: a stop in a wine bar to taste a glass of local wine (perhaps a Rosso d’Orcia) or a traditional dessert.

San Quirico may be small, but it leaves a lasting impression — in the details, in the silences, in that rare feeling of having experienced something real.
You don’t need to do much: just be there.

Some helpful tips

Convenient and well-marked parking just outside the walls

The old town is easy to explore on foot

If you love photography, early morning or late afternoon offers the best light

The Horti Leonini gardens are free to enter and open nearly all year round

Visiting San Quirico d’Orcia in one day is a simple yet genuine experience.
No rush or complicated plans needed — just walk, observe, and let the details guide you. The village’s stones, the green of the Horti Leonini, and the landscapes just beyond the center all contribute to that feeling of balance that the Val d’Orcia offers so naturally.
It’s the perfect place to disconnect, slow down, and take home a piece of Tuscany that stays with you — in your eyes and in your heart.

Looking for a one-day itinerary to visit Pienza and Monticchiello?
Two villages, close in distance but different in character: one is the cradle of the Renaissance, the other a hidden gem of authentic charm. Between them, rolling hills, scenic curves, and unforgettable local flavors.
Here’s what to see and how to enjoy a perfect day among the wonders of the Val d’Orcia.

Pienza: History, Scenic Views, and Pecorino Cheese

Leave your car outside the town walls (there are plenty of easy parking options) and begin your walk through its tidy, flower-filled alleys. Every corner opens up to the countryside, every view seems made for a perfect photo.

Don’t miss the Cathedral (Duomo), where you can admire a beautiful Renaissance tabernacle, as well as Piazza Pio II and the surrounding historic palaces.

As you wander, you’ll notice local shops displaying aged pecorino cheese, cured meats, ceramics, and handcrafted treasures. If you enjoy bold flavors, step into one of the many wine bars for a quick tasting – they’ll share stories of cheese, wine, and tradition with a warm smile.

Before leaving, stop at the panoramic belvedere: hills, cypress trees, scattered farmhouses. In just a few moments, you’ll understand why this valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Just minutes from here lie the famous Elysian Fields – a stretch of rolling hills that served as a natural set for films like Gladiator. The views open up to golden valleys and lone cypress trees, offering postcard-perfect scenes and a full immersion into the magic of the Val d’Orcia.

Lunch Break Among the Hills

Leaving Pienza, take your time on the panoramic SP146 toward Monticchiello.
The drive is short but worth savoring: every bend reveals a fresh landscape, and each stretch tempts you to pull over for the perfect photo.

Along the way you’ll find agriturismos, small trattorias, and terraces with postcard-worthy views—ideal spots for a midday break. Order the local favorite, hand-rolled pici pasta, topped with white ragù, cacio e pepe, or wild mushrooms, and pair it with a glass of Orcia DOC wine for an authentic taste of the Val d’Orcia.

Monticchiello: A Genuine Village, Frozen in Time

After lunch, head to Monticchiello – one of the most authentic villages in the entire area.
Less known, less crowded, but full of stories to tell. Park your car just outside the village and walk uphill. You’ll be welcomed by ancient stone walls, pale stone houses, and a peaceful atmosphere scented with wood and silence.

The village is small, but every corner invites a pause: the tiny Teatro Povero, flower-covered balconies, and the panoramic terrace where travelers and photographers often stop.
Here, the view… needs no filter.

As the Sun Begins to Set

In the late afternoon, it’s the perfect time to head back—slowly.
You can return to Pienza, or follow the road further to uncover less-traveled spots: perhaps Bagno Vignoni, for one last glance at the steaming thermal waters, or a quick stop near the iconic cypress-lined road of Poggio Covili, just a short distance away.

As the light softens and the colors grow warmer, the landscape turns even more gentle and poetic.
It’s the moment when the Val d’Orcia truly shows its magic.

Useful Tips to Make the Most of Your Day

Parking is easy in both Pienza and Monticchiello, but it’s best to arrive in the morning to find a spot without stress.

Wear comfortable shoes: the villages have stone-paved slopes, and you’ll definitely feel like walking a lot.

Bring a camera or a fully charged phone – running out of storage is a real risk here.

Take your time: this is an itinerary that only works if you enjoy it slowly.

This day between Pienza and Monticchiello is an invitation to slow down.
You won’t just leave with photos and souvenirs, but with that rare feeling of having truly experienced a place.
And the desire to return—often while you’re still there.
